50,000 drivers would save £120 congestion penalty using GPS tracking

March 2009

More than 50,000 drivers a year who forget to pay for the London congestion charge should use GPS tracking to remind them.

The latest GPS tracking systems can alert drivers when they have entered an area surrounded by a virtual “geo fence”.

VeriLocation believes the estimated £6 million in fines collected by Transport For London every year could be wiped out using this automatic alert.

“You get a penalty notice for £120 if you haven’t paid the congestion charge by midnight the day after you entered the charge zone,” said VeriLocation’s Andrew Overton.

“For some drivers that’s a shock as they didn’t realise they had been in the zone, despite the signage. If you are tracking the location of your vehicle or even yourself, you can get an alert when you enter the congestion charge zone.”

With VeriLocation, GPS tracking is no longer restricted to expensive in-vehicle tracking.

Now anyone can have personal GPS tracking using their existing BlackBerry or other mobile device.

The GPS chip inside the device constantly monitors its location and sends information using the mobile phone data networks.

It can cost as little as £1 a day, with all real time and historical information available through a normal internet browser.

And many devices have a built-in panic alarm, allowing a silent alert and current location to be sent in the event of an emergency.

Andrew added: “There are so many clever things you can do with GPS data now. But surely the smartest is to keep more money in your pocket by avoiding pointless fines.”
