Councils under fire for not gritting roads during the recent snow chaos can now prove routes have been gritted with new GPS technology from VeriLocation.
A clever use of its fleet tracking system VL-Fleet provides a gritting audit, and can alert councils to roads that have been missed by gritting lorries.
It can even be used to show the public over the internet which routes are being gritted in real time.
VL-Fleet is relied upon by hundreds of companies to track more than 10,000 vehicles.
With the gritting audit application, it tracks the location of all the gritting lorries in real time.
The system combines the GPS position with other information and sends it constantly using the mobile phone data networks.
Council operations managers can see their location of all lorries in real time on an interactive map, using a normal internet browser.
Sensors tell the system when salt is being delivered. Roads that are still be gritted are shown in green, and they turn red as they are gritted.
The system also allows council managers to access vital data on the performance of their fleet, how much fuel they have, and how drivers are driving.
Reports can be generated to help drivers improve the way they drive.
